How the UPC-A check digit is calculated

A UPC-A barcode has 12 digits. The first 11 are the payload; the 12th is the check digit. To calculate it:

  1. Sum digits at positions 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 (odd positions, 1-indexed) and multiply by 3.
  2. Sum digits at positions 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 (even positions).
  3. Add the two results together.
  4. The check digit is (10 − (total mod 10)) mod 10.

The generator above does this automatically. Enter your 11-digit number system + manufacturer + item code, and the check digit appears instantly. Use our UPC-A check digit calculator if you want to validate or calculate a check digit independently.

UPC-A structure — what the 12 digits mean

Digit(s)NameDescription
1Number System Character0 = standard retail; 2 = variable weight; 3 = drugs/health; 4 = in-store; 5 = coupons
2–6Manufacturer CodeAssigned by GS1 to the brand owner
7–11Item ReferenceAssigned by the brand owner for each product
12Check DigitCalculated from digits 1–11 using modulo-10

UPC-A vs EAN-13

EAN-13 is the international equivalent of UPC-A. Every UPC-A code can be represented as an EAN-13 by prepending a zero — so 036000291452 (UPC-A) is identical to 0036000291452 (EAN-13). Any scanner that reads EAN-13 also reads UPC-A. If you are selling globally, obtain an EAN-13 directly — it is recognised worldwide.

GS1 disclaimer: This tool calculates check digits and renders barcode images for any digit sequence you provide. It does not assign, license, or register official product numbers. For products sold through major retailers, you must obtain a GS1 company prefix from GS1 US or your national GS1 member organisation.
