Why Barcode Labels Improve Inventory Accuracy
Manual data entry introduces errors at a rate of roughly 1 in 300 keystrokes. A barcode scan, by contrast, has an error rate below 1 in 1,000,000 characters. For inventory systems — where one wrong SKU can mean a mispick, an incorrect shipment, or a stock-out on paper while stock sits in the wrong location — that difference is the gap between reliable fulfilment and constant firefighting.
Even a small operation with 50–200 SKUs benefits from barcoded labels. The setup investment is low — design templates once, print in batches, and update labels whenever a product changes. The ongoing benefit is fewer count errors, faster receiving, and cleaner inventory records.
What to Encode on an Inventory Label
Encode the value your inventory system uses as the primary key for that item. For most systems, this is the SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) — a unique alphanumeric identifier assigned by your business. Do not encode descriptive text, prices, or quantities in the barcode itself — those belong in human-readable text on the label.
For lot or batch tracking (required in food, pharma, and regulated manufacturing), include the lot number either in a second barcode on the same label or as part of the first barcode using GS1-128 application identifiers. For simple internal tracking, Code 128 encodes any alphanumeric SKU efficiently and is readable by virtually every warehouse scanner.
Label Placement for Consistent Scanning
Place labels on a flat surface facing outward in the most likely scanning direction. For box goods, the standard is the lower right of the primary face, 32 mm (1.25 in) from any edge. Avoid placing labels near seams, corners, or curved surfaces where the label may wrinkle. If the product is stored inside a bin, apply the label to the bin front, not the product — the bin is what the scanner operator sees.
