Generate Barcodes From a CSV File

Import a comma-separated file and generate a barcode label for each row — locally, with no uploads. Try the free single-label tool below, or get Pro for batch generation.

How it works in Batch Label Studio Pro

  1. 1

    1. Prepare your CSV

Create a spreadsheet with one row per label. Include a column for the QR content (URL, text, phone number, etc.) and optional columns for the label name and description.

  2. 2

    2. Import the file

Open Batch Label Studio Pro and drag your CSV or XLSX onto the import area. The tool detects headers automatically and shows a preview of your data before you commit.

  3. 3

    3. Map your columns

Tell the tool which column holds the QR content. Optionally bind a label name or description column. A live sample label updates as you map.

  4. 4

    4. Select your template and export

Choose a label sheet (US Letter, A4, or thermal). Export as a multi-page PDF for printing, or as a ZIP of individual PNG files for digital use.

Example CSV format

urllabel_namedescription
https://example.com/product/A1Product A1Blue, Medium
https://example.com/product/B2Product B2Red, Large
https://example.com/product/C3Product C3Green, Small

Batch Label Studio Pro accepts comma-separated, tab-separated, and semicolon-separated files, and detects the delimiter automatically.

How CSV Barcode Generation Works

A CSV (comma-separated values) file is a plain-text spreadsheet — each line is a row, each comma separates a column. Because the format is universal, nearly every inventory system, ERP, WMS, and e-commerce platform can export CSV. This makes CSV the most practical way to hand off a list of barcode values to a label generator.

Batch Label Studio Pro reads your CSV, shows a preview of the data, and lets you map columns: one column for the barcode value, optional columns for label title, description, and quantity. It then generates one label per row at the barcode type and label size you choose — all processed locally in your browser. Your data never leaves your device.

Preparing Your CSV for Barcode Generation

A few minutes of preparation prevents most import errors:

  • Use a header row

Name your columns (barcode_value, label_name, qty, etc.). The importer uses these headers to auto-detect the right columns and makes column mapping much faster.

  • Validate numeric barcodes

UPC-A and EAN-13 must be exactly 11 or 12 digits (the check digit is calculated automatically). Rows with invalid lengths are flagged before generation, not silently skipped.

  • Handle leading zeros carefully

Spreadsheet apps like Excel may strip leading zeros from numeric columns. Format the barcode column as Text before entering your values, or enter values with a leading apostrophe.

  • Consistent encoding

Save the file as UTF-8 if your label text includes accented characters or symbols. UTF-16 exports from some systems can cause garbled characters.

  • One barcode type per file

While Pro supports mixed barcode types per row, simpler workflows use one type per file (all Code 128, or all QR codes). This makes column mapping and template selection faster.
