Barcode Glossary
A plain-English reference for the barcode terms you will encounter when choosing a format, designing labels, or setting up inventory workflows. Use this page to answer quick questions before moving to a generator or guide.
Barcode
A machine-readable visual representation of data. A barcode scanner converts the pattern of bars and spaces (or dots, for 2D codes) back into the original value.
Barcode symbology
A specific encoding standard that defines how characters are represented as bar and space patterns. Common examples include Code 128, UPC-A, EAN-13, Code 39, and QR Code.
Barcode type
The name of the symbology chosen for a particular label — for example, Code 128, UPC-A, or QR Code. Different types are suited to different data and scanning environments.
GTIN (Global Trade Item Number)
GS1’s umbrella term for product identifiers: GTIN-12 is a UPC-A, GTIN-13 is an EAN-13, and GTIN-14 is used for cases or multipacks. GTINs are unique worldwide when properly registered.
UPC-A
A 12-digit retail barcode standard used primarily in North America. The last digit is a check digit calculated from the first 11 digits.
EAN-13
A 13-digit retail barcode standard used internationally. Adding a leading zero to a UPC-A produces an equivalent EAN-13.
Code 128
A high-density linear barcode that encodes any ASCII character. It is the most common choice for internal inventory, logistics, and warehouse labels because it requires no registration.
Code 39
A legacy alphanumeric barcode that supports uppercase letters, digits, and a limited set of symbols. Less dense than Code 128; use only when a legacy system requires it.
QR Code
A two-dimensional matrix barcode that stores data in both horizontal and vertical directions. It can encode URLs, long text, and contact information, and is readable by most smartphone cameras.
Quiet zone
The blank margin required on either side of a linear barcode. The quiet zone gives the scanner room to detect the start and end of the barcode pattern. Without it, scan failures increase.
Check digit
A calculated final digit used to catch transcription errors. UPC-A and EAN-13 barcodes include a modulo-10 check digit. If the check digit is wrong, the barcode is invalid.
Barcode density
The amount of data encoded per unit of barcode width. High-density symbologies (like Code 128) fit more characters into a smaller space than low-density symbologies (like Code 39).
Human-readable text
The plain-text version of the barcode value printed beneath or beside the barcode symbol. It lets staff read the value when a scanner is unavailable or the barcode is damaged.
X-dimension
The width of the narrowest bar or space in a linear barcode. Smaller X-dimensions create more compact symbols but require higher-resolution printers and better scanners.
Magnification
The scaling factor applied to a barcode relative to its nominal size. GS1 specifies UPC-A and EAN-13 can be printed from 80% to 200% of the nominal size. Below 80%, scanning reliability drops.
GS1
The global organisation that manages barcode standards for retail and supply chains. GS1 assigns company prefixes and publishes specifications for UPC-A, EAN-13, and GS1-128.
Application Identifier (AI)
A prefix used in GS1-128 barcodes that tells the scanner what the following data means — for example, (01) for GTIN, (10) for batch/lot, and (17) for expiry date.
SKU (Stock Keeping Unit)
An internal identifier a business assigns to each product variant. Unlike a GTIN, a SKU is not globally unique and does not need GS1 registration.
DPI (dots per inch)
The print resolution of a printer or image. A 300 DPI image has 300 pixels per inch. Higher DPI printers produce smoother bar edges at small X-dimensions.
Thermal transfer
A printing method that uses heat to melt ink from a ribbon onto label material. It produces durable, long-lasting labels suitable for warehouses and outdoor use.
