What is the maximum data a barcode can hold?

It depends on the format. Code 128 encodes any printable ASCII string with no fixed maximum (practical limit is determined by the physical width you can print). QR codes hold up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters. UPC-A is always 12 digits; EAN-13 is always 13 digits.

What resolution is the PNG export?

The PNG is rendered at the width shown in the label designer, scaled to match the physical label size you have set. For print quality, use the SVG export or set a generous label size before exporting.

Which barcode format should I use?

Code 128 — Internal inventory, logistics, warehouse, shipping

Encodes any printable ASCII character — letters, numbers, symbols. High data density, universally supported by handheld scanners, no registration needed.

QR Code — URLs, contact cards, WiFi credentials, long text

Scanned by smartphone cameras without a dedicated scanner. Holds far more data than a 1D barcode. Good for product pages, tracking links, and engagement.

UPC-A — Retail products in North America

12 digits. The standard at US and Canadian checkout scanners. Check digit calculated automatically. GS1 registration required for retail distribution.

EAN-13 — Retail products sold internationally

13 digits. The global equivalent of UPC-A. Any scanner that reads EAN-13 also reads UPC-A. Required for products sold in Europe and most international markets.

Code 39 — Healthcare, defence, legacy industrial systems

Uppercase letters and digits only. Lower data density than Code 128. Use when a legacy scanner or system requires it — otherwise prefer Code 128.

Exporting for print

For digital use or screen display, PNG is fine. For physical printing, always export SVG if possible — it is a true vector file that scales to any print size without pixelation. If your print workflow requires a raster image, export PNG at the highest resolution supported.

For retail barcodes (UPC-A, EAN-13) being used on product packaging, the GS1 specification requires printing at a minimum of 80% magnification. At 100% magnification a UPC-A symbol is approximately 37.3 mm wide and 25.9 mm tall.
