What Makes a Good Barcode Label?

A barcode label serves two audiences simultaneously: a scanner and a human. For the scanner, the barcode itself must be the right size, have adequate quiet zone, and be printed with sufficient contrast. For the human, the label needs readable text that identifies the item even when the scanner is unavailable.

Start with the barcode type that matches your use case:

  • Code 128 — alphanumeric, high density, logistics and warehouse standard
  • UPC-A — 12-digit retail standard in North America
  • EAN-13 — 13-digit global retail standard
  • Code 39 — legacy alphanumeric, healthcare and government
  • QR Code — URLs, contact info, WiFi credentials

Label Design Best Practices

Keep the barcode on a white or very light background. The contrast ratio between bars and background should be at least 80% for reliable scanning. Avoid placing text or design elements inside the quiet zone — the mandatory blank space surrounding the code.

Human-readable text should appear below (for 1D barcodes) or beside (for QR codes) the symbol. Include enough information that someone can manually look up the item if the scanner fails: SKU, product name, or lot number depending on your context.

For durability, choose the right label material. Paper labels work for indoor, short- term use. Polyester (BOPP) withstands moisture, chemicals, and abrasion. For outdoor use or freezer storage, use polyester or polypropylene labels with an appropriate adhesive. See our label size reference and print size guide for sizing guidance.
